Welcome to the Sail Fleet
The Sail Fleet represents sailors and sailboat owners in the Club. The overall objective of the Fleet is to bring sailors together to promote safety, improve sailing skills and to share common interest and experiences. The primary means used by the Fleet is a series of regularly scheduled Duck Dodge races conducted between April and September.
Why does the Fleet center its activities on racing?
As sailors, our highest priority is the safety of people and equipment. This can only be improved through practice. Thursday evening races give us a good reason to regularly get away from the dock. They force us to sail among other boats to get specific points regardless of the wind force or direction. As an example, apparent needless drifting in minimal wind prepares us for sailing in those emergencies when the engine won’t start and harms way seems unavoidable. The race part allows us to compare our sailing skills against other boats.
Boats ranging between 25 and 40 feet with sailors of various skills regularly participate. These races do not require the biggest crews or the fanciest high tech boats. Regardless of the level of competition chosen by an individual skipper, all boats have an equal opportunity to win based on a local handicap system that recognizes performance within the fleet.
The Fleet encourages anyone with a boat or interest in sailing to come out and participate. If you have questions on race rules or how to improve your skills as a skipper or crew, there are always racers available to give support. Come on out and join us.
