…Reach for Hospice ‘09
Reach for Hospice Race by Susan Sorensen,
Reach for Hospice Publicity
Final preparations are being made for the annual Reach for Hospice race on 19 September on Sequim Bay. For those SBYC members that may be unfamiliar with this community service tradi-tion, the SBYC club has sponsored this regatta since 1992. Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County (VHOCC) was started in 1978 and exists to provide support and care to persons in the last phase of their illness. To demonstrate the impact of VHOCC, in June 2009 they served 82 families and reported 30 deaths. All funds from this event are given to VHOCC. The funds that are raised by SBYC are specifically earmarked to provide respite care for family members of Hospice patients so that they can tend to family and personal business while a skilled nurse stays with the ill family member.
Over the past 16 years of “Reach” campaigns, $131,625 has been donated for the respite fund. In 2008, $25,094 was donated to VHOCC which provided about 1,500 hours of respite care and each year the goal is to surpass the previous year total. Contributions are tax-deductible and can be mailed to VHOCC, PO Box 2014, Port Angeles WA 98362. Think of this donation as a way of “paying it forward” to help others. Your donation does make a difference! Look at the website at www.hospiceofclallamcounty.org for more information.
